Maria Smith

Maria brings over 15 years of leadership in the nonprofit sector, with a focus on community health, housing access, and equity-driven service models. She founded Common Hands with a clear vision: that neighbors could be the first line of support when someone is facing a challenge.

Her approach combines strategy with deep listening. She works closely with staff, volunteers, and partners to ensure the organization stays rooted in the communities it serves. Maria holds a Master’s in Social Work from NYU and is a proud daughter of immigrants.

When she’s not leading the team, you’ll find her biking around the neighborhood, reading essays, or tending to her balcony garden.
